Tikal remained a mystery for centuries, after being abruptly abandoned by the Maya over 1000 years ago and overgrown by a relentless jungle. Only a legend survived among the Indians of a lost city, where their ancestors had achieved a high cultural development. Tikal was excavated by Pennsylvania University between 1956 and 1969, unveiling more wonders than can be imagined.
Iximche's core is bounded on three sides by ravine walls and separated from the main residential area by a creek. The site consists of six plazas surrounded by temples, palaces and ceremonial platforms.
